I created a silk rose petal aisle runner for Abby’s wedding on the beach in Bermuda. This all started when Abby said she wanted a silk rose petal aisle. Her wedding coordinator first said this would be fine and I thought this was not good to have silk petals all over the beach! Then she later said no loose silk petals! So I had to devise a way to turn the many bags of silk petals into an aisle runner. She said you could only use fresh petals. But I wasn’t going to let this be an obstacle but a floral challenge. I started by playing with tulle. I knew they would not walk on this ,but it would line and define the aisle in the sand. I took the bolt of tulle and folded it so there was 4 layers of tulle to attach petals to. I tried several glues but these didn’t work well , so I tried stapling each petal on to the tulle. This worked quite well but takes forever!!! I used a hand stapler because you need to reach across the tulle on top and bottom. With this process the tulle was only about 12 inches across and 45ft long for this short aisle times 2 pieces. I mixed white and pink petals and spaced them loosely across the tulle. I was able to just roll these out on the sand aisle sides, threw some of the pink Bermuda sand on them and there was no blowing petals and it looked like real petals. I also had a bag of fresh rose petals that I brought from home to throw between the petal borders. The combination worked and looked great and it gave my son a job as a flower girl with the fresh petals. I also decorated the 2 front chairs with a sheer pink bow and a large single open silk pink rose and a chunk of the petalled tulle behind the rose. This was certainly not your usual pew bow! So no more blowing petals in the sand. View picture below for details of aisle runner.

My daughter Abby got married on Memorial Day on Jobson’s Cove in Bermuda. There were 16 of us who took a cruise from Norfolk,Va. This was a 5 day cruise with a wedding in between. The wedding was outdoors on the beach at 6pm in the evening. Everyone was barefoot and casual except for the bride and groom. The decorations and flowers were very simple- a brides bouquet of pink silk roses,a silk rose bout for the groom, silk rose petal aisle runners to mark the aisle,15 chairs with 2 pew bows and a single rose, and a bag of fresh rose petals for my son,Brian (aka the flower girl) to throw, and 2 rose wristlets for the moms.. So for a florist this was the bare minimum. But this is what she wanted! There was a short ceremony and then cake and champagne was served while formal pictures were taken. What a great way to have a small wedding. was perfect as planned- the weather, the setting, the cake, pictures etc.I have a few of our pictures to share and a detailed description on petal aisle runner.

Last weekend I was able to work at Lee’s Flowers in Washington,DC. They had a large party for the 25th anniversary of Catholic Charities. There were 75 table arrangements some on top of silver trumpet vases and others in large silver ceramic cubes. The designs were made of all white flowers including hydrangeas, roses, lisianthus and a few carnations. both designs were done on oasis balls to get a really rounded form. Under the trumpet vases was a grouping of three julep cups with a single head of hydrangea. The pre-prep and organization made this job go smoothly. It had been about 2 years since I had worked in their shop and one of the best things they had done was to add a water hose to each work station. This really saves time ,labor and of course money! The hoses hang from the ceiling so they are not in the way. How far do you have to walk to get to your water source?

Today I worked on planting my seedlings which I started under lights. I planted most of these in large pots around the garden in different areas. The reason for the pots is two fold -first this allows you to move them if you need to, and we have a problem with voles. They destroy and eat the roots of annuals, perennials and some shrubs. They only gnaw on the roots and leave the rest of the plant to die. What I’m trying this year with annuals and herbs is taking a plastic pot and planting your herbs in it and taking another pot of the same size and sinking it in the ground and then putting the other pot inside it. So you have one pot inside the other- both the same size. This way the vole can’t get to the roots of the plants. So I think this will really work to keep the voles away. The voles also don’t like poisionous plant roots of foxglove, daffodils, castor oil bean plants to mention a few.

For Mother’s Day I freelanced in two different shops. This is always a great experience because every shop runs differently and you can always learn something new to share each time! I worked several days at Bergerons Flowers and Events in Springfield, Va. I last worked there during valentines day and was excited to be invited back. This shop is very involved in floral industry organizations and has an elaborate ever changing personal website. The site changes every holiday, every season with the shops own specialty designs. For each design there is a notebook with a photo and recipe for that design. When a particular design sells out for a holiday-that design is removed from the website. This process takes alot of time taking photos, making recipes ,adding and removing from website -but this really makes their site there own!!! You really need to check it out. They are using a new tool in their shop that really helps when doing silk designs. If you do any work with silk flowers you know how thick and tough some of the stems can be to cut-so they have a new tool that cuts thru the stems like butter. The tool is a piano wire cutter. You may have to go on line to find them -but it’s worth it. But theyr’e not cheap they cost around $80.00 but will last a long time. They may not open to fit the entire stem but with 2 cuts you will be thru!!!! Tips like this make our jobs so much easier. Bergerones also offers floral design classes in their shop-good for thoses in No. Va. area.I will let you know when the next class will be. I also worked at Studio Three Flowers in LaPlata ,Md. I work at this shop which is close to home in So. Md. I have freelanced in this shop for several years ,so it always feels like home when I work here. The owners David and Anne Ford were out of the shop on saturday for their daughter Katlin’s Graduation from college at UDC. Congratulations to them all! Hope everyone had a profitable and Happy Mother’s Day. Try freelancing at another shop to learn all kinds of new things in our floral buisnesses.

I have been growing annuals and perennials from seeds under lights. They are almost ready to be planted out in the garden. I have taken them from under the lights and brought them outside to a place where they are not in direct sun, out of the wind, but get good light. This hardening off process prepares the weak seedlings for the brighter light and winds and temperatures. They will stay in this area for several days to a week or more before planting in the direct sun of the garden. If you took the seedlings direct from the lights and planted them out in the garden they would burn up and not succeed. These seedlings are all growing in jiffy 7 pellets and did not require transplanting to another pot. These will be planted directly into the garden . I have given them an organic dry fertilizer topping, which will be enough for several weeks.
